From Joshua Tree community member Celeste Doyle, on litigation regarding Dollar General’s plan to build a store in Joshua Tree:
“We have contacted an attorney. He is willing to write and file our initial pleadings by this coming Friday [July 5, 2013], but he needs us to pay the filing fees and has asked for a retainer. He has offered to take our case for 15K maximum – with fees and other costs, the case would cost us between $20-25K.
“Which gets me to the fundraising . . . we need about $3K a.s.a.p. if we are to file this case.
“So this is to remind those of you who were at the meeting yesterday, and to ask those of you who were not there (and who also support litigation) to call in all your favors and ask everyone you can or are willing to ask for firm pledges for $ – be sure to write down who and how much – no checks at this time and cash only if they insist and you write down who and how much.
“IF WE DON’T HAVE $3K PLEDGED BY TOMORROW (MONDAY, JULY 1) NOON, OR AT LEAST SOMETHING VERY CLOSE, I DON’T THINK WE CAN CONVINCE THIS ATTORNEY TO SPEND TIME ON OUR CASE –
“EVERYONE WHO GATHERS PLEDGES, PLEASE EMAIL ME WITH YOUR TOTAL AMOUNT BY NOON TOMORROW [MONDAY, JULY 1], AND WHETHER YOU THINK YOU MIGHT BE ABLE TO SCARE UP ANY MORE BY THE END OF THE DAY.
“PLEASE – I know this is last minute and asking a lot, but as I said, we only just became aware of this closer-to-affordable attorney . . .
“Thanks everyone for everything you all have done in this matter –
“It has been long and at times difficult and a worthy fight for the future of our community.”
